Depth of Solder Penetration
drastically affects the breaking load of the joint. When there is
too great a soldering clearance, there is no capillary flow to assure
complete solder penetration. As shown in the chart below, the holding
power of the 3/4-inch joint is directly proportional
to the depth of solder penetration.

For example: If you get only one-third penetration,
you get approximately one-third the strength needed to assure complete
satisfaction.
