　　Increased security concerns and critical sequencing of processes have prompted the use of locking devices and interlocks for valves. While the most basic of locking devices is the chain and padlock, complex process plants are more frequently utilizing key interlock systems. Interlock systems are used on valves when sequencing of valve operation is critical to the safety of plant personnel, process unit operation or the environment. Interlocks are provided with keys which are released only under specific conditions such as when the valve is fully open. Once the key is released it can be used to open the next valve in sequence.
